Etymology
First attested as altfurse in 1134. Compound of Old Dutch alt (“old”) and a term related to Old English fyrs (“gorse, Ulex europaeus”). The second element appears to have been reinterpreted as Middle Dutch vorst (“preserve, royal forest”) in younger attestations. Compare Lage Vuursche.
