Borrowed from Turkmen Aşgabat, from Classical Persian عشقآباد ('išq-ābād, literally “city of Ashk”), compound of عشق ('išq, “Ashk”) + آباد (ābād, “city”), Ashk/Arshk being the name of the founder of the Iranian dynasty of the Arsacids.
