Etymology
From Bengali বান্দরবান (bandorban), from earlier বান্দরবাঁধ (bandorbãdh, “dam of monkeys”), a compound of বান্দর (bandor, “monkey”) + বাঁধ (bãdh, “dam”), such named due to a legend that monkeys were once seen walking in a row during a heavy rainfall and that this row was compared to a dam by the locals.
