From Bengali বান্দরবান (bandorban), from earlier বান্দরবাঁধ (bandorbãdh, dam of monkeys), a compound of বান্দর (bandor, monkey) + বাঁধ (bãdh, dam), such named due to a legend that monkeys were once seen walking in a row during a heavy rainfall and that this row was compared to a dam by the locals.
