First attested as De Eerste Beneden Veen Dijk Sloot in 1723. Derived from beneden (“lower”) and a compound of veen (“peat bog, marsh”) and sloot (“ditch”). Named after a nearby ditch. The element beneden was added to distinguish the settlement from Boven Veensloot.
