Etymology

Berkel is first attested as bercle in 1214. Enschot is first attested as endeschit in 1164. Berkel derives from a compound of berk (birch, Betula sp.) and lo (light forest). Enschot derives from a compound of eind (end, edge) and Old Dutch *schid (boundary, watershed). Formerly two independent villages.
