Etymology

Readaptation of a substrate loan from Sicilian cuccumeli:

  • from an unattested Medieval Greek *kokkýmēlion, ultimately from κοκκύμηλον (kokkúmēlon, plum), from κόκκῠξ (kókkux, cuckoo) + μῆλον (mêlon, apple, any fruit from a tree);
  • alternatively from κόκκος (kókkos, grain, seed, kernel) + μῆλον (mêlon, apple, any fruit from a tree) (cfr. Κώκαλος (Kṓkalos) for the first element).

Possibly cognate with Greek Κουκουμέλης (Koukoumélis).
