Etymology
From Middle Dutch elfdusentmaechdendach. Equivalent to elfduizend maagden (“eleven thousand virgins”) + dag (“day”). After the mediaeval legend of Saint Ursula, that told that eleven thousand maidens were martyred alongside her.
