First attested as herdingfelde in 1105. Derived from a compound of Old Dutch *Hardo (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and veld (“field”). Originally the name of a single village, currently split in Boven-Hardinxveld and Neder-Hardinxveld.
