Etymology
First attested as heringhehusen in 1344. Compound of Middle Dutch Here (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and the plural form of huus (“house”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to haring (“herring, Clupea harengus”).
