First attested as kathaleke in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Ketlik, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian katte (“cat, Felis domesticus”), Katte (“a personal name”) or kat (“type of sluice”) and leka (“natural watercourse”).
