Klippschule

German

Etymology

17th century, from Middle Low German klipschôle (16th c.), probably from klippe (clog, wooden shoe) + schôle (school). By surface analysis, klipp (click, clap, interjection) + Schule. The original meaning may have been simply “village school, working-class school” (where the children wore clogs), but already the earliest attestion has the modern, restricted sense.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈklɪpˌʃuːlə/

Noun

Klippschule f (genitive Klippschule, plural Klippschulen)

  1. (chiefly history) an unofficial school operated privately to teach (poor) children elementary skills
    Synonym: Winkelschule
  2. (by extension, derogatory) a bad, ineffective school
