Etymology

Potentially attested as gestele in 1147, attested with certainty as gestele in 1186. Derived from a compound of moer (peat bog, area where turf is extracted) and the common toponymic element gestel (inn, guesthouse). The element moer was added to distinguish the settlement from Luyksgestel.
