Etymology

Coined by Bardwick et al in 1980 as an acronym of some of the main features (though this list is neither exhaustive nor always accurate): polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy or edema, M-protein (an abnormal immunoglobulin), and skin abnormalities.
