Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-.[1] Cognate with Thracian *zelmis, Lithuanian želmuõ, želmeñs (“plant, sprout”), and Latvian zel̂me (“vigorous, opulent growth”).[2] Compare with the Latvian hydronym Zelmin and the Lithuanian toponyms Želmenų káimas, Želmeniškių káimas, and Žalmiškių káimas.
