Etymology

Borrowed from Iranian; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾstn'), 𐫟𐫇𐫀𐫘𐫤𐫗 (xwʾstn /xwāstan/) (whence Persian خواستن (xwâstan)), Parthian 𐫇𐫟𐫀𐫍𐫏𐫅 (wxʾhyd /xwāhed/, to wish, desire, seek). The same word is found in the wholly-borrowed terms դատախազ (dataxaz) and մատակախազ (matakaxaz).
