From Proto-Indo-European *h₁epi (on, upon). Cognate to Ancient Greek ὄπιθε (ópithe, behind), ὄπιθεν (ópithen, behind) (alternative form of ὄπισθεν (ópisthen, behind, backwards, in the future)).[1]
