From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂em-p (“to bend”). Close to Ancient Greek κάμπτω (kámptō, “curve, bend”), Sanskrit कम्पते (kampate, “trembles”), Latin campus (“field”), Lithuanian kam̃pas (“point, edge, angle”), Old High German hamf (“lame”). Related to Latin gamba.
