Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Origin disputed. Two etymologies have been presented, both with phonetic difficulties:
- Akin to Komi-Zyrian дзир (dźir, “hinge”), Udmurt ӟиры (dźiry, “hinge”) and dialectal Hungarian csir (“bolt in a hinge”), thus from Proto-Finno-Ugric.
- By metathesis from earlier *sanara, borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian sąnaras (“hinge”), sąnarys (“joint”)).
