Proto-Indo-Iranian

Etymology

Perhaps from the the BMAC substrate.

Pokorny suggested from Proto-Indo-European *h₂n̥t-ko-s, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ent- (to weave) on the basis of Ancient Greek ἄττομαι (áttomai, to weave), Albanian ent, int.[1] Lubotsky considers this "most probably wrong", presumably given the strange root structure and accentuation.

Noun

*(H)átkas m[2][3]

  1. cloak, coat

Descendants

  • Proto-Indo-Aryan: *átkas
  • Proto-Iranian: *áδkah
    • Avestan:
Younger Avestan: 𐬀𐬜𐬐𐬀 (aδka), 𐬀𐬝𐬐𐬀 (at̰ka)
