Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kénḱ-u-s ~ *kn̥ḱ-éw-s, from *kenḱ- + *-us. Perhaps cognate with Ancient Greek κακός (kakós, bad, awful, worthless), Lithuanian keñkti (to ache), Proto-Germanic *hungruz (hunger).[1]
