Proto-Japonic
Alternative reconstructions
- *sunti
Etymology
If the reconstruction is *sunti, possibly a compound of *su (unknown, possibly the same source as Japanese 脛 (sune, “shin”)) + *ti (“life essence, spirit, power”). Alternatively, PJ *tuy might be the reconstruction of Old Japanese 霊, 血, 乳 (ti, “life essence, spirit, power; blood; milk”), connecting with Old Japanese 唾 (tu, “spit”), from the way that blood and milk can drop to a ground.
