Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From *věděti (“to know, to wit”) + *-a, ultimately from *wóyde (“to have seen”). The lemma originally referred to the result of viewing, witnessing, which later evolved to mean knowledge, information. Cognate with Lithuanian vaĩzdas (“view”), Sanskrit वेद (véda, “knowledge”) with a shift from male to female gender, due to the collective nature of the Slavic term. German Wissen (“knowledge”) is also derived from the same proto-Indo-European base, however, following a different morphological path.
