Etymology

Räsänen reconstructs this root as *hārγï, which is then compared with Finnish paarma (horsefly, gadfly).

Chuvash and Kipchak languages at large seem to have adopted the compound *bạl *kūrtnï (honey worm) instead of *ārï.
