Etymology

From Proto-Austroasiatic. In Northern Vietic (Viet-Muong), the velar nasal in the rime *-iːŋ fronted to -iɲ, hence the reconstruction *ciɲ in (Ferlus, 2007). The lower register tone in the non-Viet-Muong languages indicates originally voiced onset .
