From Middle High German cerimōnie, from Medieval Latin ceremonia, from classical caeremōnia. At first only in ecclesiastical context, broader use since ca. 1600 after French cérémonie, which also causes the now predominant final stress.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /tseʁemoˈniː/, (now chiefly Austria) /tseʁeˈmoːni̯ə/
  • The second pronunciation is widely obsolete in Germany, but remains in Zeremonienmeister.
