Etymology

Ancient Greek ἄγνωστος (ágnōstos, “ignorant, not knowing”) (see a- (“not”), gnosis) + -opsia. Literally, "not knowing what one sees".

Coined by S. Zeki and D. H. ffytche in 1998.[1][2]
