From āke (“edge”) + -ññe. The connection here is to a land on the edge of a country; on the border; the march. Compare Old English Mierce (“Kingdom of Mercia”), Italian Marche (“a region of Italy”), and the etymology for English Ukraine, from Old East Slavic украина (ukraina, “borderland”).
