Etymology

From à- (nominalizing prefix) + kùkọ (partial reduplication of kọ (to crow)), literally That which crows, cognate with Igala àìkọ, Igbo ọ̀kụkụ̀, Edo ọkhọkhọ. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *à-kɪ̀kɔ. Likely related distantly to Proto-Bantu *nkókó, of onomatopeic origin. See Akan akokɔ and other cognates in Benue-Congo
