From Proto-Iranian *rijáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *riȷ́ʰáti, from Proto-Indo-European *liǵʰéti, derived from the root *leyǵʰ- (to lick). Cognate with Kashmiri لیَوُن (lyavun) and Persian لیسیدن (lisidan).
