angle iron

English

Noun

angle iron (plural angle irons)

  1. A length of iron or steel, having an L-shaped cross section, used as a structural support
    • 1938, Xavier Herbert, chapter VII, in Capricornia, page 92:
The homestead [] was of corrugated iron on an angle-iron frame.

Usage notes

Although the sense of angle iron in reference to steel angle stock is a misnomer (comparable to tin foil in reference to aluminum foil), it is well known and still sometimes heard.
