1. (transitive) to leave out, omit

   Sie ließ die Fragen aus, die sie nicht sofort beantworten konnte.

   She left out the questions she could not answer immediately.

2. (transitive) to melt (butter etc.); to render down (bacon, fat etc.)

   Butter im Topf auslassen und dann die Zwiebeln hinzugeben.

   Melt butter in the pot and then add the onions.

3. (transitive) to let out (clothes)

   Die Hose können wir im Gesäß noch etwas auslassen.

   We could let out the trousers a little in the seat.

4. (transitive) to vent, air (a negative feeling); (with an) to take out on

   Schön, dass ich mal meinen ganzen Ärger auslassen konnte.

   It was nice that I could vent all my anger for once.

   Sie hat ihre Wut am Mobiliar ausgelassen.

   She took her rage out on the furniture.

5. (reflexive, with über) to comment, remark on (especially, though not always, in a negative way)

   Sie haben sich in der Presse recht abfällig über Ihren Vorgänger ausgelassen.

   You have commented rather disparagingly on your predecessor in the press.
