1. to fear, be afraid

   Synonym: craindre

   J’ai peur qu’il ne parte. ― I am afraid that he will leave.

   J’ai peur de me tromper. ― I am afraid to make a mistake.

   Tous mes amis ont peur de mon père. ― All my friends are afraid of my father.

• avoir peur que takes the subjunctive and, in formal language, the meaningless "expletive" ne which does not negate the verb.
• très (“very”) may intervene between the verb and peur, despite the fact that peur is a noun. This was once proscribed but is now accepted.
