Derived from bōde (“barrel”), butte (“barrel”) (whence Danish bøtte), German Bütte, borrowed via Medieval Latin butina from Ancient Greek πυτίνη (putínē), βυτίνη (butínē, “flask”). Another possibility, preferred in older literature, is a derivation from Middle Low German bodik (whence Danish buddike), German Bottich (“tub”), borrowed via Latin apothēca (“storehouse, (medieval) container”), from Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē, “storehouse”).
