Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 不忍, composed of (not) and (to restrain oneself).

Its original meaning is "intolerable, insufferable", whence arise "[intolerably] ruthless, heartless, cruel" and "compassionate, sympathetic [towards intolerably destitute people]"
