blast furnace gas (uncountable)

  1. A gaseous, low calorific value by-product of blast furnaces generated when the iron ore is reduced with coke to metallic iron; commonly used as fuel within the steel works in which the gas is generated. The gas consists chiefly of inflammable nitrogen and carbon dioxide with about 20% of carbon monoxide.
