Cognate to Portuguese bordegão, Catalan bordegàs. Of disputed origin. Probably from Late Latin burdus (bastard). Likely containing Latin burdō (hinny), but according to others bastardo, Catalan bordo, and the second element is with doubts Latin equus (horse), the end the typical unstressed suffix -ano.
