Unknown; said to be a corruption of Chinese 高樓/高楼 (cao lâu, literally “high floor”) or 乾撈/干捞 (can lao, literally “dry tossed”), as in 乾撈麵/干捞面 (can lao miến, literally “dry tossed noodles”).
