chùa chiền
Vietnamese
Etymology
Attested as chùa trièn in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum, so the etymological spelling would be *chùa triền. In Nôm texts, the second element was spelled with various characters (including 傳 (MC drjwen), 廛 (MC drjen), 纏 (MC drjen), all with retroflex initial), although the etymological source is most likely 廛 (triền).
