Apparently from Portuguese dar-lhe or dá-lhe (“give to him/her/it/them (sg.)”), (formerly) used similarly in Daman, Ceylon and Kochi.[1] Most likely also influenced by Cantonese 打 (daa2, “to hit, to beat”), such as in the formation 打你 (daa2 nei5, “hit/beat you”).
