Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اشراف (eşrāf, “noble, honorable, reverend; the descendants of Muhammed”),[1][2] from Arabic أَشْرَاف (ʔašrāf), plural of شَرِيف (šarīf, “noble, honored”).[3]
