From a widespread Niger-Congo root, Blench (2003) proposes a reconstruction to Proto-Niger-Congo *-kuku, likely Onomatopoeic. Compare with Nupe lukuku, Urhobo inékuku, Yoruba èrukùkù, Igbo kpalakwukwu, Ebira arekuku, Ifè àlúŋ̀kùkù, Olukumi olékùkù, possibly related to Ibibio ebomon-kuku.
