Borrowed from Latin empyreum, from empyrius, derived from Ancient Greek ἐμπύριος (empúrios), from ἐν- (en-, “in”) + πῦρ (pûr, “fire”) (whence Swedish fyr (“fire”)). First attested in 1871.[1]
