From French entreprendre, from entre (“among, between”) + prendre (“to take, to make”), a calque of Frankish *underneman (“to undertake”). Compare Italian intraprendere, German unternehmen, Yiddish אונטערוואַרפֿן זיך (untervarfn zikh).
