Probably from Old High German folgēn (“to follow”), whence also bòlgan (“to obey”) (see there for more). Does not follow regular f > b sound change; perhaps influenced by Standard German folgen. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
