gedib
Azerbaijani
Verb
gedib(dir)
- third-person singular second present perfect of getmək
- Uşaq məktəbə gedib(dir). ― The child has gone to school
Usage notes
- In written Azerbaijani, the present perfect forms on -ib are interchangeable with forms on -miş-dir. These two sets of morphemes with similar functions partially form complementary/overlapping sets, since the paradigm on -ib lacks forms for the first person (forms like gedibəm are obsolete in the contemporary language), whereas the forms with -miş-dir are dispreferred due to the dropping of the final -r, which results in merger with past perfect perfect -miş-di, a contracted form of -miş idi. Using third person copula -dir in forms with -ib is optional and often dropped. Thus:
- Mən məktəbə getmişəm. ― I have gone to school.
- Biz məktəbə getmişik. ― We have gone to school.
- Sən məktəbə getmi(ş)sən/gedibsən. ― You have gone to school.
- Siz məktəbə getmi(ş)siniz/gedibsiniz. ― You guys have gone to school.
- O məktəbə getmişdir/gedib(dir). ― S/he has gone to school.
- Onlar məktəbə getmişdirlər/gedib(dir)lər. ― They have gone to school.
