Inherited from Proto-West Germanic *grunnattjan, from Proto-Germanic *grunnatjaną (to grunt). Related to Old High German grunnezzen (German grunzen), Old Norse *grynta (Swedish grymta). Equivalent to grunnian + -ettan.
