From Old Norse hlíta (to rely on, trust, abide by), according to Pokorny, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱley- (to lean, incline).[1]

Cognate with Swedish lita (to trust, rely on, depend on, confide in), Danish lide (to trust), and English lite (to expect, wait).
