From Proto-Semitic *ʕVṣṣūr- (“bird”). Cognate with Ugaritic 𐎓𐎕𐎗 (ʿṣr /⁠ʕuṣṣūru)⁠/). Compare also Arabic عُصْفُور (ʕuṣfūr) and Biblical Hebrew צִפּוֹר (ṣippór).
