Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съпасти (sŭpasti, to save, to redeem from eternal damnation), from Proto-Slavic *sъ(n) + *pasti (to pasture, herd). Compare Serbo-Croatian spasiti, Czech spasit, Russian спасти (spasti).
