From Proto-Bahnaric *ɟrlaː (“thorn”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟlaʔ (“thorn”); cognate with Halang jơla, Khmer បន្លា (bɑnlaa) and Old Mon jirla (“thorn”) (modern Mon ဓလ (həlɛ̀ˀ, “thorn”).
